Edgaar was born in a small village just north of Marner between the Timber forest and the shores of Grendep Bay. Whilst geographically closer to Ratik his Frost Barbarian heritage is evident. Edgaar’s father Rothgaar worked in a sawmill supplying timbers to the Marner Shipyards whilst his mother Hildegaard helped out at the fish market.
Ratik is poor province constantly under threat from the humanoid of Bone March. As a child and young teenager Edgaar helped his mother at the fish market to help the family eke out a meagre existence. He has no siblings as frankly Rothgaar and Heldegaard could barely afford to keep one child. One day when he was fifteen, while working at the fish market, he befriended a crewman of a ship called the Mandragora that was in port to resupply and take on trade goods for its return to its home port far south. The allure of steady work and adventure led him to join up as crew.
Over the many years that Edgaar has been a member of the Mandragora crew, trading progressively gave way to Privateering against the Bone March and later the Scarlet Brotherhood as it was more lucrative and fortunes were not subject to the uncertainties and competition of trade. The security of three hearty meals a day and a guaranteed hammock was more than the poor son of a sawyer and fishwife could dream of and he is content with his lot. And when the Mandragora strikes a good booty, his share affords him finer wine and finer meal and a finer bed in a port hotel as well as feminine company. Indeed, within a month of joining the Mandragora, Edgaar got his first opportunity ashore flush with funds from his first 'paycheck'. He wasted no time in finding a high class brothel where he indulged in the best meal and the finest wine he’d ever dreamed to have. And even had enough coin left over to entice one of the staff to keep him 'company' in his room overnight.
Despite being totally content with the adventurous and bawdy life of a sea rogue, Edgaar does fantasise that maybe he could one day command his own ship, though lucrative as his profession is, gods know how he would ever afford it.
Since then the Mandragora has traveled most of the known world's oceans and seas trading and occasionally raiding. The Mandragora had recently moved to the Azure Sea when the captain accepted a commission from the free city of Safeton to patrol the local waters and protect the city and nearby coastal villages from raiders.
The Mandragora had a stout crew but needed to boost its fighting capability on land so it sailed to Hardby to hire a small contingent of mercenaries. Not passing up an opportunity to make extra profit the Mandragora also took on 3 passengers bound for Safeton.
Edgaar recognized one of the passengers, Saab, as a native of his homeland and spoke with him eager for news of home. Edgaar learned that the three passengers were traveling together. Two of them, Saab and Tellius, had journeyed from the Frost Barbarian Kingdom in search of a legendary sword to defeat a dragon menacing the north of the kingdom. The third passenger, Lucien, joined them in Greyhawk city and was searching for his father. The two quests were somehow related and takes them to Safeton. The peril to Edgaar's homeland worried him.
During the brief voyage to Safeton each mercenary was assigned a crew member to 'show them the ropes'. Edgaar was assigned to Rondo. A grim looking ex-solider from the Kingdom of Furyondy. Rondo and Edgaar quickly became friends.
Once the Mandragora docked at Safeton the crew were left to their own devices for a few days while the captain met with the leaders of the city. Rondo and Edgaar spent the days and evenings with Saab, Tellius and Lucien as they searched for information. Edgaar was concerned about the situation in his homeland and eager to help in the quest for the sword. Rondo tagged along as he had nothing better to do. Saab, Tellius and Lucien had lodgings at an inn. Rondo and Edgaar slept on the ship.
The third night in Safeton the Mandragora caught fire under mysterious circumstances. The crew managed to save most of their possessions but could not contain the blaze. The ship burned to the waterline. Rondo and Edgaar stored their rescued gear in the rooms of the travelers and crashed there for the night.
The next morning the devastated captain canceled all mercenary contracts and disbanded the crew. That day Lucien discovered information pointing to small fishing village half a days walk south of the city. That they all stayed at the inn and after some discussion it was decided that Rondo and Edgaar would join the others in their quest.
Just after daybreak the next morning the group goes to the market square to purchase a pack mule and supplies before heading to the village.
